When we started with a single overland truck in 1983, Kumuka was hoping to engage with youthful adventurers who wanted to experience the breadth of Africa. As we worked tirelessly to ensure our clients got the best out of their trips, our popularity and reputation grew, as did the size of our African operations. The Kumuka experience soon proved addictive and many of our clients expressed the desire to see other parts of the world with us.

We listened, and since then we’ve steadily extended our operations to include Asia, Central America, South America, the Middle East and even Antarctica. While we’ve developed the way we do business along the way, expanding beyond just the overland truck to also offer rewarding public transport tours, we’ve stuck to our core values – we put the customer experience first and foremost, and ensure our itineraries and costs are transparent. We want you to know what you’re getting and know that the price we quote is the price you pay (we include so many activities and entrance fees in our tour prices).

We’ve never stopped listening to those early Kumuka travellers, who tackled the wilds of Africa with us in the 1980s, and that’s why we’ve recently introduced a tailor-made department within our organisation. They are for those of you who want the Kumuka experience – a holiday enjoyed to the maximum – but would like to choose both the itinerary and duration of your tour, as well as the group of people you’re travelling with.

What’s Your Perfect Trip?

The ideal travel experience is different for everyone. For some of us, it’s all about the destination. For others, it’s all about the journey. Travelling can be a time to push your personal envelope and meet new people, or it can be a time to cherish long lasting bonds with friends and family. What’s your perfect trip?

Q I HAVE MORE TIME THAN MONEY AND I’D LIKE TO SEE AS MUCH OF AFRICA AS I CAN.
We’d suggest one of our many African overland adventures. The ‘Best of Africa’ tour, which takes in nine nations over nine weeks, would be a great choice, as it will expose you to some of the continent’s best wildlife and some of its most interesting cultures. You’d travel in our comfortable customised overland trucks, and camp under the African skies most nights. Besides getting great value for your money, you’ll also have the company of up to 23 like-minded individuals.

Q MY EXTENDED FAMILY (ALL 26 OF US!) WANT TO REVISIT MY GRANDFATHER’S HOMELAND OF ECUADOR.
We can definitely help – trips like these are part of the reason why we created tailor-made travel. Considering we’ve handled groups of up to 200, your family of 26 shall not be a problem. All you need to do is contact us and discuss where exactly you’d like to visit, how long you’d like to visit and what your budget is. If some of your family would like to do different things, like add a side-trip to the Galapagos Islands, we can work that in as well.

Q I’VE ALWAYS DREAMED OF GOING TO INDIA, BUT I’M A LITTLE INTIMIDATED BY THE THOUGHT OF DOING IT ALONE.
Any of our five India itineraries would suit you. They each delve into different aspects of the Indian culture, and take you to fascinating sights along the way. Three of our tours use India’s iconic railway to complete some segments, which is an essential experience for many. By travelling with a helpful English-speaking Kumuka guide, you’ll always feel secure. And with up to 15 fellow travellers, loneliness needn’t be a concern.

Q I’M CURRENTLY PLANNING MY HONEYMOON. CAN KUMUKA HELP?
Yes. Considering you’re not likely to want joining a traditional tour (unless your wife-to-be is extremely forgiving and flexible), we’d suggest using the services of our tailor-made division. They will work with you to ensure every aspect of the trip, no matter where in the world you’re thinking of going: from the major details, like flights, accommodation and destination, to the minor details, such as entrance admissions and restaurants.

Q MY HUSBAND AND I WOULD LIKE TO TAKE OUR TWIN BOYS (AGES 7 AND 9) TO CHINA.
Our new Family Adventures tour ‘Chinese Kites, Warriors & Pandas’ should perfectly suit the bill. Walk with your sons along the Great Wall of China, visit the Terracotta Warriors, learn to make Chinese noodles and fly traditional kites with local children. While in Beijing you can visit pandas at the zoo, the Summer Palace and Tiananmen Square. We also limit the tour’s size to 16 people, so your family won’t feel constricted or overwhelmed by the group dynamics.
